Hi Fellow expats,

I am relocating to HK in Feb and will be looking to move my furniture over in July/ August. I am wondering if any one can give me some indicative costs and any company reccomendations?

Thank you in advance and sorry if the question has been answered many times before.

Santa Fe are good. They're not cheap but the service is top notch. As for cost, it depends on what you have. Certainly in our case I think the bill was over 10k USD.

I would also strongly recommend a professional orientation when you get here.

dipper has a good point. However it is a difficult decision sometimes. If you absolutely know you're going to be abroad 2-3 years, by all means store stuff. If you're not sure, well at least export pack your stuff before it is stored. That way a moving company can just pick it up and ship it to you later with a minimum of fuss.

"Traveling light through life" is worth it if you move around a lot. In the end all that stuff is just in the way. I remember having 7-8 full bookshelves of books, many in double rows. We'd read books and put them in the shelf, never to be picked up again. Now we can't even fill 2. Same with kitchen stuff. Does one really need 4 corkscrews. If you buy new, throw something old away.

Sorry I am actually moving from Singapore to HK. V excited. And i totally agree w axptguy38, after having moved around a bit, all the furniture and personal items become such a liability, am throwing away things now and just keep the bare essentials w me. Like, books are great, but i am also packing them in a storage now.. anyhow, appreciate your response.

Yep, agree with other posters. Note that you're moving here in Feb, but not looking to move stuff until summer, presumably allowing yourself a few months to find a place. Unless you're on a monster expat housing allowance, you will quite likely find yourself having to adjust to less living space in HK than you're used to back home. Not a serious problem - you get used to it after a while - but certainly has implications as you how much of your original furniture you'll want to ship up here.

Agree that best option is to leave some flexibility in the way you pack on moving out of your current place, so you can ship or store your existing belongings depending on your new HK pad.
