I am a young professional from the US (I am a US Citizen). I have been in Hong Kong for about 1 year and 8 months. My debt here is zero. However, between moving, a few unexpected medical, dental, and social issues as well as living above my means for the first year, I have incurred a sizable us$25000 in credit card debt on top of my lovely us$85000 in student loans. Now I am fully aware that the student loans are here to stay. But the recent increase in my credit card debt had made it impossible to keep up. I need to fix this before it gets worse. I am in a situation of barrowing from one card to pay another.
Anyway...that’s the situation financially. Now, whether or not bankruptcy is the route to take is what I need help with and not just your opinions, I am looking to see if any one knows of a good lawyer or firm that can advise as well as file for me while I am here. Ideally, this would be a firm here, as dealing with this from overseas seems like a nightmare within a nightmare.
OR also useful would be if any of you have filed for Personal bankruptcy in the US while living here. I am looking at chapter 7, aside from the non-dischargeable student loans. Oddly I have almost perfect credit as of now…but this means little to me as I have no plans to return to the US for anything more than visits.
Any help would be much appreciated. I am looking to get this resolved within the next year.
