Website languages

I am trying to buy something from a US website, however during the checkout, it reads from my address (or maybe my IP address) that I am from HK, and it switches to a Paypal site for my credit card entirely in Chinese! There is no ability to select a different language. How ignorant to assume that someone from HK is only going to need Chinese, and to force the user onto a Chinese language page. Anyone knows how to stop the website from hijacking me???

Try going here http://proxify.co.uk and then finding the site you want and trying to buy it again. This will hide your IP and the website should just let you carry on as if you are in the U.S. The alternative is quite complicated and will require a few long term changes.

On the page before you log in, on the top right hand corner, you have the option to choose Hong Kong English or chinese and you still have this option when you've already logged in.

I've use Paypal for years and have a HK address and have never had the problem you described.

When you log in, is your account in english? and only switches to chinese when you are trying to pay? Maybe it's something you should email HK paypal about, they are usual pretty good at getting back to you.

dizyhites, the website designers are actually trying to help. They are probably reading your system locale as "Hong Kong" (a Windows setting) and thus assuming Traditional Chinese. Quite frankly most users in HK have Traditional Chinese as their native written language so it is not such a stretch to go with that as the default.

As kamm says though, go to your Paypal account and make sure your display language is English. This should save a cookie in your browser that will get you English every time.

It is an issue.

I went on ebay.hk

The seller is a german company. They have a full listing in Chinese. But nothing in the English language tab.

Perhaps it is down to the vendor to select. but there seems to be no universal translator.

The listing language on ebay is up to the seller. They are the ones who write the listing. This is separate from any website logic.

You can do machine translation here: http://translate.google.com/#
