yes it is but better do it indirectly like let your close friends know and they can help to spread the word-by-mouth. i'm sure your friends will understand if you prefer money over unwanted/unbearable gifts.

well, if it was my party, i would not say that "i want money!!". there will be a few close friends to whom you can express that you prefer money as a gift and those few close friends can help spread the word. sorry i'm just repeating myself here. it's upto people whether they want to help you by gifting you money or by just giving you gifts other than money - it's their choice, by the end of the day. :)

I think lhednrizon's friend might be asking for money to pay for expeses? Like to pay for their part of the dinner or something? That is quite normal in Western culture. But I think it sucks! IF someone throws a party they shoudl pay for something - at least pay for food and tell people to BYO alcohol or something. I know that in many cultures that asking for some guests to pay their way is completely bad manners! If you cant afford to have a party - wait until next year! Just dont go. If she is not a close friend save your money for something else.
