Car laws for babies in UK and Aus

Does anyone know the laws in the UK or Australia regarding a baby/child traveling in a car? What age can they transition from car seat to no car seat?

Also, I have the maxi-cosi car seat for my 6mth old. It recommends use for 0 - 9mths. What does my child sit in after 9mths for traveling in cars?

Car seat law UK: http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/law/index.htm

Car seat law Australia: http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/countries/australia.htm

I only skimmed through them but it seems children must be "suitably restrained" and in "an approved child restraint", which typically means car seat, then booster up to about 135cm and/or 15 years. Note that Australia has a special "top tether" provision to the law.

The "small seats" like you have are recommended to 9 months, but many babies won't fit after 6. After that you get a bigger seat that you don't lift out. The best ones face back initially and can then be faced forward. Technically you can put the kid in one of those from birth but the carrying option is so practical few people do. From around 4 you can use just a booster.

The staff at places like Bumps to Babes can advise you.

Also, Australia doesn't allow those infant carrier car seats that are strapped in using the seat belt. They must be attached via the proper iso-fix seat base...

You could check this out - it complies with US federal transport laws...http://babycentral.com.hk/joey-safe-child-car-safety-harness.html

I don't know if it's OK in Aus/UK but have to say it gives me peace of mind if I'm travelling in a HK taxi!!

Since the 1.3 there are new child restrain laws in Australia. Children have to be in a proper baby seat until they are 4 and in a booster seat until they are 7. check it out under http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/children/childrestraints/childrestraintlaws_faqs.html
