Your post is not clear.

Is it the first time you have used the machine, and it smelled like mothballs (MB) before you used it (are you the new tenant)?

Or have you used it many times, but this time you have the new smell?

My initial thoughts either way.

If the former: Previous tenant used mothballs. The smell might eventually wash out of the machine. I would ask the landlord for a new one.

If the latter:

Did some mothballs get in with the wash? Check pockets.

Are you using a new powder? Check smell of powder.

Could the smell be oil/grease? If so it is possible that the machine is about to have some catastrophic failure.

Do you have a seperate water supply for toilets and washing machine? If so check to see it is not contaminated water.

As for getting the smell out of the clothes, I can't suggest anything. Sorry.

Sorry for not being clear enough. I've had the machine for 6 yrs and used it for 6 years and never had this problem. It smells musty, like mothballs (doesn't literally have mothballs in it.) I've googled for a few suggestions and looked at the troubleshooting part of the manual, so hopefully I've fixed the problem. Thanks anyway tigerbay.

buy the cleaning tablets that are available for both washing machines and dishwashers

usually lemon flavour.Normally in most supermarkets and use one now and again to freshen up your machine before it becomes stale and smelly.Another way is to programme a rinse cycle after your washing has finished so that the machine is flushed by clean water, the smell is created by dirty water stagnating in the machine.

I would suggest that the filter for the pump is dirty. Normally an easy job to just unscrew and clean under a tap.

And /Or perhaps unscrew the water supply and discharge pipes and clean them out also.

You may like to run the machine without clothes and put in some bleach to kill any mould building up in the pump and or pipes. I would run the machine again after the first time to ensure the machine has no remaining bleach.

I was told by my washer repairman to put vinegar in and run through a cycle. Repeat as necessary. Also clean the filters.
