Wondering if any Moms travelled during their 1st trimester?

We have planned our vacation for Easter with our kids and relatives....... is it ok to travel in the 1st trimester?

We are going to Langkawi.

Thank you for any advice and story shared.

I travelled to India, Singapore and Australia in three separate trips all within the first four months - no problems at all. No reason why you cant travel.

Yes, I travelled in the first trimester in both pregnancies. Unless you have real medical reasons not to, I do not see why you would not be able to travel. (I have heard this before, 'you should not travel in your first trimester', but can honestly not think of a reason why not). Have a great time in Langkawi and congratulations on your pregnancy!

Some moms who have great difficulty with their pregnancy and are at high risk of miscarriage would be advised not to travel in their first trimester - but you would know if you were one of those people! So it's absolutely fine to travel...

... the only downside is if you have morning sickness and feel miserable and want to stay in bed all day long!

With care you should be fine! My blessed healthy baby is now almost 5 months old and I have been flying everywhere so much during my pregnancy. Think just when he was conceived I travelled from UK to Shanghai. Then to HK, to Sabah, to HK, to SH, to BJ, to HK... everywhere!

Some mainland friends said I should be avoiding going through the metal detector at the immigration/custom but I didn't. As long as you're not walking through the x-ray machine I think you're fine!

Travel or not you might need to be a bit more careful anyway now that there's a little person living in your belly~! Congratulations on your pregnancy. Good luck and best wishes!

Thanks everyone. Reason I ask... my sister had a miscarriage after she flew to Singapore and returned during her 1st trimester. Then last week, a friend went to Dubai, and then came back, had a miscarriage as well after returning to HK.

Just seems like it's a message to me ! (silly I know, but just worried as I never travelled in my previous pregnancies.)

My doctor says it's OK to travel but... still wondering if it's true flying during 1st trimester increases the chances of miscarriage.

Thanks.

As cara says, miscarriages in the first trimester are quite common, flying or not. We didn't even tell anyone about the pregnancy until 12 weeks had passed.

most miscarriages happen within the first trimester and therefore flying long distances is not usually advised....i think it's just playing it safe...why risk if you don't have to?

"Not usually advised" by whom? Saying things like "why risk if you don't have to" is only valid if there is evidence of increased risk, which there isn't.

There is no evidence of extra risk from traveling. Unless the pregnancy is "high risk" as defined by a doctor, there is no reason to stop traveling. Heck, most people don't even know they're pregnant until well into the second month.

As cara says, miscarriages in the first trimester are common whether you travel or not.
