This bugs me: "This attack has reverberated right to the top of the force. . There has never been an attack like this on a Westerner before. They [the Triads] have crossed over a line and the fact that it happened at such an event is causing a lot of concern.""
This sounds like it matters more if it happens to a Westerner. Are perhaps not local fingers as important?
I will also say that there is almost always more to the story than is in the paper.

I recall this slashing incident very clearly... it was at around the same time as the Nancy Kissel trial... there was very little coverage of this in the newspapers... strange considering we had a daily blow by blow of the Kissel trial on the front page - surely there would have been massive interest in this trial as well...
When the woman was convicted there was a story with her name but no proper photo of her (all they published was a pic of her with her face covered)... as for evidence, they had multiple witnesses who clearly heard the women the call to summons the animals to revenge her loss of face...
I asked a friend who was at the time a senior reporter at the SCMP about the lack of coverage on this... and he said you can bet your bottom dollar there the media were told not to make a big story out of this - or else.... you don't mess with these guys....
What was that saying about Hong Kong - underneath the calm surface there are hundreds of voracious crocodiles....
There's a pretty good book that details the power of triads - Lords of the Rim Sterling Seagrave - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_Seagrave

Get real people, try and look outside of your safe little Xpat Bubbles once in a while............for hundreds of years the Triad way of settling disputes was the only way for many locals as the HK Police and the law itself were viewed as innaffective and an onerous Western approach towards dispute settlement..........Even today in HK society many locals rely on their "Big Brothers" to assist with dispute settlement - this approach is deeply engrained in HK culture and should not be a shock as attacks of this kind happen all the time in HK, read the local newspapers !!!!!..............it just so happens that some poor banker was on the receiving end this time, he wasn't the first and I seriously doubt he will be the last.

I'm surprised there aren't more attacks on foreigners by local HKers considering the attitudes many troublemakers bring with them from their home countries. Chinese in west are easy targets because they are the minority, but in HK, westerners get off easily despite being the minority here. I guest as long as they stay in the expat environs of LKF and Wan Chai, foreigners only fear is getting beat up by fellow foreigners.

sorry what trouble do these expats bring? if you refer to brawls in LKF, then i can understand, but what else?
Please support our advertisers:
Public drunkeness, confrontational/loud abusive behaviour (usually using racial slurs, etc), urinating in public, disrespect for police officers, groping and propositioning women on streets, etc.
Things you would typically see in Wan Chai, LKF, and TST.

Revisiting the original topic... the culprit made phone calls to her triad animals... surely the phone company would have had the identity of the person who took those calls... surely they could have found and interrogated that person ... and witnesses might have ID'ed the person as one of the attackers... I do not recall this being done... difficult to do any research - as pointed out there is nothing on the web about this trial... you can't even find the woman's name....
