Ed, we are going around Easter so i guess that wont be low season.. Thinking I ought to do it here in HK even tho it is a total pain - need to fill in forms, brings all sorts of documents, photos and pay 4 times more!!! But cant risk 2 hours at the passport control with two 3-year olds... Do you know if the hotels still offer that VIP service where they do a visa for you - or still banned? was banned in July last year...

I believe the better hotels will do this for you... I have also heard of people paying the staff a discreet 'tip' to get them through quickly... from time to time I think they try to stop the airport staff from running side businesses but its never successful... where there's money there's a way in Bali...

We stayed in a Club room at Intercontinental last October. Via email we were told that they no longer operated that VIP service but when we arrived at the airport the hotel staff were there waiting for us - we were out the airport in about 20 minutes.

On a related matter... if you are over the limit on booze and you have the idea of avoiding duty by slipping the dude 20 bucks inside the customs declaration form, don't try that anymore... apparently they have installed cameras to monitor the laddies... they will not take the cash and will invite you into the back room to pay the backhander in private... for each bottle of wine you bring offer USD10... if they ask for more tell them you need a customs receipt... they will take the $10 if you do this...

Btw a USD10 bottle of wine in HK costs about 40 in Bali... so worth bringing with you if you plan to indulge...

oh, good point! whats the limit? went to embassy today - what a circus! had to have photos on red background - not white, oh no! so have to sort it out for the whole family, then 20 dif copies of all sorts of documents, $358 dollars each (!!!), had to go to the bank to pay, then come back with a pay slip... was just about livid by the end of it!!! better be a huge line in the airport at the passport control, so at least that would be worth it!!!!
