Dumb question from a luddite.

My D Drive is full. As far As I can see there are not files of mine on it, apart from my restore file set. But it is full.

Disc clean up comes up with no space to be saved.

I have no idea how I filled it.

What can I do?

It could also be a virus.

Ok so likely it isn't a virus. But you can't really be certain unless you run a virus check with a virus scanning boot CD.

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

Two free programs I recommend that could help with this, but in any case will fix other stuff.

- Advanced System Care (free version) from www.iobit.com . Does a variety of checks for junk in registry and so forth.

- Revo Uninstaller (free version) from www.revouninstaller.com . Great for REALLY uninstalling stuff and taking all the crap away. Also has a stellar startup manager so Windows only starts what you want it to.

It is a laptop.

I did Advanced System Care yesterday, no difference.

How big is the D drive as reported by Windows? Sorry I come up with new questions but I am still trying to get a handle on the problem.

Well, that is quite weird. Sure sounds like a virus. I would go to a specialist.

Is it a laptop? Does it have face recognition? I have a lenovo that chewed through disk space - something to do with it storing information from the face recognition software every time you started it. Most annoying.

But any computer - over time - will build up a store of information that you may not actually need. Internet browsing history, system restore etc can all become amazingly large. I had an antivirus, that unless you ticked the right box tended to store the automatic updates, rather than delete old ones. Only about 1mb or less per day for each update, but a year of these really added up!

email is another killer for disk space - if you have friends that send on comedic spam with attached images/videos this also chews space.

Finally, if you burn dvds etc - or rip dvds, then the program you use may/nay not automatically delete the temp file after use.

Sorted.

Looking at the D drive contents it shows (greyed out) the backup folders I thought I had delted. The folders show zeor bytes and show no files if you try to list them.

However, when I deleted the empty folders I got my space back.

I need now to change my backup settings, so that it does not backup my movies and music.

If I was more IT savvy I could have seen it, but I guess MS is not so intuitive in some areas.

Hidden files then. That's why you can't see them. There's a way to set that in Explorer. Anyway glad you got your space back!

Do yourself a favor and invest in backup drive. I like the 2½ inch variants. They cost more per GB but the form factor makes it better. Many come with decent software for backing up. If you lose your machine it's nice to have a separate backup.

Will do.

I see 1 TB here now in china for about 1200 rmb.

Even in Ireland it is only 70 euro.

Ho hum.
