I am traveling alone. Any previous travelers think I need a local guide to help get around ot will my Insight Guides book be enough for me?

A friend of mine who is based in Vietnam recommends this hotel www.mifuki.com

If you have a higher budget try the form at the top of this hotel - it will get you special offers from the 5 star properties

Thank you. I am at Ramana Hotel. Not best but has ok reviews. Very little Language skills and only have guidebook and map. Thats my concern. I know what i want to do but read mixed reviews all over intenet about how to get around. Many posts here are year old or more. I dont know anyone there.

My old college roomate from Vietnam is in France. So he suggested I get a guide. Cant find info on guides.

I've been to HCM 20+ time since 1991... in terms of things to do and see not a lot has changed... so I would discount most of the input on those threads...

The restaurants I have recommended are ones that I have been going to for years... you gotta try the seafood soup at Lemongrass!!!

If you want to arrange a tour the best place to go is Pham Vu Lao (I hope I've spelled that right)... its a street about 10 minutes from downtown HCM... its where backpackers stay and there are loads of budget tour operators there... every morning you will see buses picking up people to take them on the various tours... Mekong Delta, City Tour etc...

The amusing thing is if you book from one of the operators there... you get the same tour that you will get from some of the top hotels ... but for a fraction of the price... I found that out when I booked something and paid 40 bucks... the bus picked us up then made its way to that street and picked up backpackers and I found out they paid about half of what we did...

Just make your way down there and you can arrange just about anything you want...

If you have any specific questions I can try to help - again, worth having a read of those other threads as there's some good info there

I used the guide "Luxe" when I went there and I liked every place they recommended when it comes to food, drinks and shopping. They don't really talk much about sightseeing. The guide is well done and small enough to take everywhere.

Thanks to Ed and all the others for advice here.

Two questions: Should I take US dollars there and exchange at airport?

Or should I just take my HK dollars and exchange?

Last one: Clothing - Is it true what I have been reading. I can take little and buy ok clothes there?
