I want to buy a new mobile phone. Every time I go into the shops to look I get more confused. I have narrowed it down to 4 brands Nokia, HTC, Blackberry, and an iphone. I am just overwhelmed by what is out there. Please help a non technical person with some information I can understand to buy a new phone.

Blackberry - excellent for business use. Very easy to type given the keyboard. Not so good at "leisure" stuff like music, videos and games. Excellent battery life.
HTC - Don't know much here. Some models are ok but watch out for the slow ones.
Nokia - The Smartphones want to be in the same segment as Blackberry. I find the interfaces a bit quirky.
iPhone - It's a video iPod AND a phone. The apps are what make this phone great. You can find an app for basically anything. For example.I found one the other day for practicing Chinese characters. I used to be a BB die-hard but now I love my iPhone. Typing is quite a bit slower than on a phone with a physical keyboard.

iPhone, without a doubt. Nokia has lost the plot and Sony too chunky. BB only if you have to for work. HTC catching up but handsets date very quickly and Android still developing. Only question is price, but you get what you pay for.

Thankyou for your help I will go and look at the iPhones again and see if they explain the features.

The problem with just examining the out of the box iPhone features is that it doesn't come with a huge amount to start with, at least compared to what it can do. 140000+ apps provide functionality for the phone in ways that the original designers could probably not even imagine. That's the strength of the iPhone.

What are the features you mainly use? email, games, music or others? Blackberry is great on email but the plan is quiet expensive, HTC is better off to run on Android that have more fun application, and iPhone is one of the well known great products, and Nokia is bit out now.
iPhone you can get it from Smartone, 3HK or online stores, I believe Smartone has current promotion for Standard chartered card holder with no prepayment.
HTC your choice are Nexus one, Magic, Hero, Tattoo, these are running on Android. I will go for Nexus one, biggest screen and fast cpu.
BlackBerry has to go through carriers with their own plans.
