Go gradually to formula. Start with the meal when she is most hungry (breakfast if memory serves).

She will not starve herself. If she doesn't take the formula, don't give her anything else. If she knows she can hold out for the breast, she will do so. However, if she gets nothing she'll take the formula next time.

Why do you want to start her on formula now? By 9 months she is probably eating lots of regular food, so will also start gradually cutting down on milk. At this point, I think we were down to 3 breastfeeds/day -- first thing in the am, mid-day and last thing before bed. If the issue is pump fatigue, you could just bf her morning and evening and offer her formula during the day -- she won't starve herself, and she'll either make it up in formula or other foods.

My #2 had a small afternoon bottle of formula every day which he started to disdain at about this age -- it drove Ayi crazy b/c she really loved giving him that bottle, but he apparently was saving up his hungry for the good stuff before bed. Plus, he was eating something like 8-10 oz of pureed food per meal...

I've also read that you can mix breast-milk and formula together to gradually get them used to the taste - because formula seems to have a very distinctly sweet taste.

Try just adding a little bit of formula and if the baby is used to it, keep increasing the amount of formula.

You may also need to try different brands, but that could end up being expensive!

You have done an excellent job breast feeding your baby for 9 months .

Unfortunately breast milk tastes much nicer than formula and this is why your baby is reluctant to take the formula . You can try different formulas to see if there is one that is more suitable to her "gourmet " palate or continue to breast feed her until 12 months old when you can start introducing full cream cows milk . You and your baby would be very welcome to come to baby clinic where we can discuss this in furthur detail .
