Too Much Medicine for Infant!

Went to the doctor about my 19-month-old's chesty cough. She's coughing infrequently, but I could hear her breathing rattling in her chest and it sounded quite congested.

The doctor prescribed the following medicine:

1. Fever

2. Coughing

3. Sputum

4. Antibiotics

5. Running Nose

I asked him if he was over-medicating and he insisted he's not one of those poly-pharmacy doctors.

So I gave my daughter the antibiotics 4 times daily as prescribed. The others were also 4 times daily but I didn't give the fever and running nose. Finally, two days later I decided to check the internet and the medicine for "sputum" is recommended for twice daily, not four times. And the coughing medicine also doesn't sound very good.

This "chesty cough" has been going around lately - I'm sure other parents have taken their infants to the doctor. What were you prescribed? This is surely too much medicine!

Could anyone suggest a good doctor for me who won't over-medicate? Location: Aberdeen / Ap Lei Chau, over to Pok Fu Lam and as far as Repulse Bay area?

Thank you!

i usually just let my daughter's cough's and colds run its course on its own without seeing a doctor. the only times i do take her to a doctor is for fevers.

but our pead did suggest i should bring her in if she develops a very phlegmy cough as she says complications might arise from the phlegm entering her lungs.

i think in ur case, if you've already taken her the doctor, regardless of which doctor, you can still use your own discretion whether you medicate your child. i think u've already done this by opting out certain meds that were given.

we live in shatin, so i can't recommend our pead to you. but good luck.

I recommended you to take your kid to another doctor. The doctor you saw is not a qualified doctor. If your infant having a heavy or frequently cought, go to see a Chinese medicate doctor for better. Tracheitis is trachea inflammation. My daughter usually come running-nose first, then fever, then cough. But my daughther don't cough like rattling like your infant. My daugther eat Chinese medicine prescription. Your medicine list I will not give to the kid. I think that your has no running nose no fever just cough only. Try ask your close neighborhood for help.

That does sound like a lot.

Recommendation in your area: Dr. Kennelly and Dr. Thondup at the Repulse Bay Medical Practice are excellent. I would trust them with anything regarding our family. They give medicine when necessary but tend to be conservative. Very pleasant experience overall. 2812 2677

Hi Michelley - agree with you about cough and colds. I only worry about chesty coughs in case they turn into pneumonia!

Also, yes Cara didn't consider about the strength of the medicine. Anyway, I stopped giving her the cough medicine because online it says it can cause excitability in children, and she's been naughty since taking that medicine!

Axptguy - I'm familiar with Dr Thondup, but he is a paediatrician. We have a regular pead but for coughs etc, I was hoping just to use a regular (cheaper) doctor. Anyway, I'll give their clinic a call to find out how much his and Dr Kennelly's consultation fees are. I definately want to try someone else, that's for sure!

Thanks for your help!

Dr. Kennelly's typical consultation is 600. Discounts for helpers. Although she is not a pediatric specialist, she can and does treat children as well.

Dr. Thondups fees are somewhat higher.

I would say that we use them both, with Dr. Thondup more for "unusual" things. ;)

Dr Penny Nicolle at OT&P in Repulse Bay is also excellent. She is a GP not a paed, very sensible and down to earth and definitely does not over-medicate. She has two young sons of her own so is a Mum too which I like.

Yes, I'm familiar with OT & P because we took our daughter to see David Henderson, who is also very lovely - but I don't think he's at Repulse Bay all the time. Thanks for the contact.

While I have heard good things about OT&P, I am always suspicious of doctors who advertise homeopathic treatments. If you are into homeopathy or not is one thing, but medical science is based on scientific principles, and homeopathy is impossible to reconcile with such.
