Skype using iPhone 3GS or Nokia N97 on CSL 3G network?

I currently have a samsung omnia 2, and I use skype a lot to call OS. However it's annoying to use skype with an omnia because you need a headset and I'm looking to change to an iPhone or maybe Nokia N97mini.

Can anyone out there confirm that they're able to use the skype iPhone app via CSL 3G network (ie not wi-fi)?

How about the N97 on CSL? I've seen the nokia app for skype work in the UK and it is great.

Thanks for your tips, I really don't want to fork out six grand for an iPhone that doesn't do what I want....and CSL can't/won't tell me!!

I have an iPhone and 3 is my phone carrier. I am unable to use Skype, with WIFI or with 3G. A message comes on saying, "additional fees apply". I can use Skype instant messaging though.

aissanabs, that sounds like you are trying to use Skype to call a "normal" number. In that case fees do apply.

You CAN get Skype to work on 3G but it is not enabled to do this by default. Skype by default wil only work on wiFi. To get it to work on 3G you need to download an app such as "voipto3g" which tricks Skype into thinking that the connection is on WiFi. There's other VoIP apps now that can talk to Skype phones that don't need the additional app.... check out "Fring"... This should do the trick. When OS4.0 comes out you will also be able to multitask on your iphone 3GS so you can then run Skype or Fring in the background and it can wait for incoming calls. For now on OS3.x you need to get yet another app to do this such as "Backgrounder" from the Cydia (Jailbreak) store..... For the record, my iphone is an older 3G and I use both Backgrounder and Skype with the VoIPto3G and I call home often. My phone rings with Skype calls when I'm out just like a normal phone. Of course its best with WiFi but so long as you have good reception on 3G it works very well....

Hey thanks everyone for your replies. I reckon I'm going to hold out to see how the OS4.0 works when it comes out later this year. I really don't like the omnia 2, but I have to admit it's a decent phone and does skype really well.
