I've just had a phone call from a nurse to say I need to make a follow-up appointment regarding the result of my smear which I had last week. I asked her if it was normal (never had an abnormal smear in my life) and her reply was that I needed to make a follow-up appointment. Is this the normal procedure here? It's my first smear in HK and wondered if making a follow-up appointment to tell me my result is normal is the usual procedure? Or do they they only want follow-up appointments if result is abnormal?

You should call back and ask them to explain you clearly what is the result (it is good or not ?) or ask for your doctor to call you back if they can't do it over the phone.
Usually they don't ask for a follow-up appointment if the result is ok. That MAY mean that it is not normal this time.
It happened to me, my pap smear result was not good and I had to do another one a few months later (I think 3 months later) and this one was normal. So don't panic, my doctor told me sometimes it can happen, especially when we get older (I'm 40 and had 2 children).
Also, I always ask them to send me a copy, so I can keep it in a file as a reference.
So just call back to get the precise report.

My result is normal and they just sent me a letter to inform me. I got mine done in Family planning association though. May be different from private doctors? Not sure.

If it's a good doctor - they won't make a vague phone call like that. You should insist for more information and if the nurse is not authorised to give it, then the doctor should talk to you.
And like it's been said... an abnormal test is nothing to be greatly concerned about at this stage.
I had a few abnormal tests and had to return for new ones, and eventually the doctor sent me to someone else - the abnormal tests being a result of the first doctor's inexperience of not knowing where to "scrape"!

Dr Belinda Leung ,Nathan Rd Kowloon tel-27860888 and Dr Tsang tel-26672235. hes in Jordon are both good.I had a positive result once it was due to my womb being at a tilt,I go back every 6 months for a smear and last time with Dr Tsang he did a scan due to irregular periods to see where my eggs were,he took a photo and gave to me.Go see the doctor get your results and copies then if you need follow up I highly recommend the above doctors.

Well I got my result this afternoon and the result is normal and the follow-up was because of mild thrush. Why the hell that can't be given on the phone is beyond me. I asked the doctor why the nurse refused to tell me the reason for the follow-up was thrush and not an abnormal smear result and her reaction was, "mmmm..." from behind her mask and lots of nodding!

The nurse who calls isn't allowed to discuss any details over the phone. Her order was simply to call you to make an appointment. Of course it's frustrating and worrisome.

i had a phone call just this morning and i think it's the same case with lurcher,the nurse said that the result of my smear that was done last march 30 has a problem and it's worrisome indeed...she's wants me to go to the clinic this afternoon but is imposible for me to go since my dayoff is only on sundays
