You cannot go wrong with Canon as far as a balance of cost, quality and range goes. They are perhaps the most extensively digital camera selling company in the planet right now. Now if you are willing to pay more and quality is important, there are more choices.....

Agreed that Canon rocks. My mother just got a new Ixus 120 IS and it is amazing. Personally I wouldn't get one of the touchscreen models since they seem a bit more "fiddly".

It will depend on your requirement.

To me, the output is what’s matter. You can download samples picture from websites like dpreview.com. In its sample picture, they do not use extra adjustment so it should be similar to what a layman use the camera. See it the way you use, i.e. if you typically develop 4x6, then do develop all to see how you like.

These hours, I will look closely at cameras with larger sensors which are more likely to give a better picture quality than the smaller one, practically the rest in the crowd.

My takes are

Canon S90 (really pocketable with its large sensor with some handling issue),

Canon G11 (very much the same as S90 except a better lens, quite large and not pocketable),

Panasonic LX3 (the one that starts it all for larger sensor camera – reach/zoom may be the problem as well as size which some may not be able to fit it in their jean pocket)

Samsung EX1/TL500 (a somewhat ‘copycat’ of LX3 with a better reach and likely better sensor technology. Expected some launching soon so it may take a month or two to get more information on this camera)
