Yes, DVDFab is a good paid-for one, but when you go to buy the DVD to Mobile license for US$30 it requires you to buy the DVD to DVD one for another US$50! And this is for one year only. What a gyp.
Handbrake is a free alternative and will convert most non-encrypted DVDs well. Also converts to diff mp4 types i.e. PS3, iPod, iPhone. There are subtle diffs in all codecs even if they all appear to be mp4. Handbrake has easy to use selection on right side.
Videora is a common one for converting from one codec to another ie from AVI to mp4 and is very simple (DVD Fab charging $40 for that pleasure).

To convert an .avi file to iPod, get iSquint. That's how I move everything to .mp4 format for iPod viewing.
