Thanks to all for your response to my earlier thread re pros and cons of X5 vs XC90. I think we've decided to zoom in on the X5 but now we have another option - a Porsche Cayenne.
Which is a better 2nd hand car - X5 or Cayenne and for the price of an older Cayenne, I could buy a X5 about 3 years newer. We just need a nice, robust and safe car to drive around with our 4 month old baby.
And any idea how much to pay for a 2004 X5 3.3 and a 2003 Cayenne?

X5 is more sporty while an XC 90 is more easy to drive. XC90 is easier to get in and out off as its seat bases are lower. X5 is higher. Check the overall heights as well. Many old car parks in HK are 1.8 m high so parking can be a nightmare. Cars like the Landrover Discovery can not get in there. the bigger the engine the cheaper they actually are. v low resale on any engine over 3.4 l as the road tax is over 9.7k/yr. prices of all such cars start at 180k and go up to 300k. if running cost is an issue I would recommend the Discovery 3 diesel. Its super cheap to run but can only be registered as a light goods vehicle (which means the rear side windows are black) . It comes with a hydraulic suspension that can be adjusted from the inside so ride height can be really lowered to enter tight car parks.

Regarding power, you should look primarily at torque figures and not horsepower (relative to weight of course). HK driving is very much about torque given the hills and turns. Max horsepower is pretty academic since speeds are low.
Diesels tend to have excellent torque.

agree on the torque as a factor to select the car. I had a 1995 BMW 2.5 convertible which could not climb the hills with ease. We then bought a BMW 318 2000 model and it just sprinted. The manufacturers had replaced the gearbox with more low end torque for the range that most of us use. They also reduced the body weight a bit and replaced weight loss with 6 airbags for safety instead of the usual 2. I drove the XC 90 in USA. Its what they call in USA a soccer mom car but having said that it has won over 30 awards for safety, comfort etc etc so it definitely is a great vehicle. Have heard bad reviews about the 2.5 Turbo though. SO go for the 3.0 engine.

Volvos don't overheat in far hotter places than Hong Kong. Why would they overheat in Hong Kong?

have you seen the waiting times for a simple service for BMW in HK. Unless you have an aftermarket dealer doing your servicing you are stuffed. A friend sent his 5 series for a simple oil change service and the car has not even been moved at their premises in 8 days. check availability of spares for both as well. Pyramid Universal usually have a good aftermarket supply for most european brands . .
