A friend of mine will soon be moving to HK with his family.
He will bring a bit of cash with him to open a bank account & use this money for food, housing, etc.. until he gets his first salary
Is there any maximum amount that you can bring in HK without having to declare it to the customs at the airport?
I remember Australia is AUD10,000, how much is it in HK?

Why carry so much cash???? just do a transfer safely from one bank overseas to one here in HK or access the cash via a debit or atm card!

Mainlanders bring in that much case in suitcases all the time to go shopping for bags, watches, apartments...

More a concern from wherever he is coming from.....
eg. Oz is $10000 (or equivalent) whether you are bringing it in or taking it out, so he may have to declare on departure depending where from.....
