Mobile phone bill scam

ORIGINAL POST

Hi @ all,

since my first post was removed, I will try it again without the company name.

I just received my monthly telephone bill from one of the biggest HK mobile phone companies and they are charging me 1000$ over the normal bill, as I am supposed to have used 1600 minutes over my monthly contingent.

I wouldn't complain if I would have really used that much minutes, but I found out they are also charging me incoming calls.

In the contract and even the small printed nowhere is mentioned, that the minutes are for in and outgoing calls.

I think this is complete scam.

Does anyone know if all the HK mobile phone companies are doing this, or can annyone suggest, what I can do ?

Thanks and greetings.

I'm not entirely certain, but I think charging both for incoming and outgoing minutes is normal in HK, just like in the US.

True, that's completely normal billing. I had the exact same experience, albeit on a smaller scale. Its just how the system works over here. You will get charged by the minute of "air time" that your mobile phone has, independent of call direction.

There are two main methods of charging:

- In North America, minutes are typically charged both in and out.

- In Europe, many countries only charge the mobile phone subscriber for outgoing. However in these countries mobile phones have separate area codes, and calling those are codes costs more than calling landlines. So the cost for incoming calls is simply transferred to the caller.

Where possible, you should forward your phone... to your office or home. That way you won't be paying for any airtime. (am I correct?)

And yes... joining the same network as people that you call frequently will redude costs.

Well, we don't have a landline so that's not an option. ;)

Package airtime tends to be pretty cheap. Get as much as you think you need, and some more. Once you go over, that's where the companies make some gravy.
