Flying unaccmpanied to US

Has anyone let their child fly unaccompanied to US.

I am thinking of sending my 8 year old to California to spend the summer with his cousins.

I used to fly unaccompanied when I was young, but I am not sure how it is now for kids, and how it is when he arrives.

He has flown many times before, but never unaccompanied, and hasn't been on a long haul since a toddler.

Depends on your son pretty much. Is he ok with it? The airlines are pretty careful about this sort of thing. Few things will give as bad publicity as "losing" a child. on arrival there should obviously be someone to meet him.

I flew unaccompanied to the US at 7, with two stops. I still remember that.

I'd choose your airline carefully, hope others can advise here. I wouldn't trust a US airline, they're plain incompetent as it is! There's no way in hell I'd do it, I'd be a nervous wreck!

If there's one thing airlines don't want, it is "losing" a child. US airlines have big liability exposure to this kind of thing due to the nature of the US legal system and I would trust them in this just as much as other airlines.

I will agree that most US carriers aren't the strongest in customer service.

My 10 year old is flying unaccompanied minor to US on a US carrier. He needs to stop over in Chicago and get a connecting flight. I've paid for UM assistance but I'm worried about his transit at Chicago O'hare. One question: Will airline staff / agent help him with his luggage through customs clearance? He is neither big nor strong enough to handle two pieces of heavy luggage.
