I think best to call the airline and explain the situation as they usually have some emergency seats.
Using the website will not enable you to explain the situation.
I read on the BBC that it is possible that some flights willbe starting up again soon.
Sorry to hear your news.

Try going via the middle east to say Dubai or Qatar and then try for a flight to Spain or Portugal, once there you can train/boat it to the UK.Cheers

Once air travel starts up to the affected areas again, the airlines will definitely be putting in larger aircraft and extra flights if they have the capacity. However expect quite a backlog.
Don't go to the airport. Call the airline. Explain what is going on.
You can, as trawler says, fly to Southern Europe and take train/bus north. However these modes are also rather full at the moment, despite increased capacity.

Unfortunately It is proving almost impossible to contact any of the major UK airlines in HK. It appears that some of them have taken their phone systems down. I am going to try and visit the offices.

We have family stranded here. Currently no airline will be able to get you on a direct flight to the UK. The earliest booking our 2 guests could get with Virgin was May 10th....
Your best bet is to try to get a flight to Southern Europe and then train and ferry it from there.
Cathay has a backlog of 1700 and Virgin 1500 stranded passengers - apart from the fact that the flights are overbooked already...
As long as the UK airline space is closed the airlines are unable to give you any answer.

More likely the phone systems are overloaded.

Possibly.
Just been to see Virgin as my son is due to fly back with them tonight. Decision at 5pm on whether the flight goes ahead but i suspect that is just delaying the inevitable.
Been told the next available seat is 13th May

My son was supposed to fly back on the 17th which was cancelled, and he was rebooked to fly back on 22nd, but it doesn't look very promising that he'll be going then either. After checking availability of later flights with every airline I could think of, it doesn't look like he'll get a another flight until at least the middle of May (if they resume by then!!) ... and his university exams start on the 11th!! What a nightmare ... no idea what the procedure will be if he doesn't make it back as we're still waiting to hear from the university. But at the end of day, I don't want him flying until it's safe ... he'll have to do the exams at a later date.

Yep - within 3 hrs the earliest date on virgin went fro the 13th to the 16th. Once UK airspace opens they might implement some priority system + extra flights but until then it is all looking very grim.
Spoke to my son's Uni this PM and they had no idea things were so bad. I suggest calling yours.

In the emergency situation, regarding the original post, ....a UK citizen can go to the consulate for help and advice.
