Small, portable laptop

Hi,

I'm looking for a small and portable laptop, for internet usage and Microsoft Office usage. Would also like to look at photos and perhaps use it to upload photos and text to an online blog.

I want:

- small

- happy to opt for secondhand, as long as it's not too old and slow

- could consider both Mac and PC.

I'll probably be using it at home, so I'm not too fussed about battery power.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what they thought was a great little machine that didn't break the bank? What else should I be considering?

Thank you!

I would recommend a second hand Thinkpad X Series. Durable business machine. Small size. New it is about 12-16 k but used you could get one for less than half.

If we're going down into the Netbook sizes (I wouldn't) Asus and Acer both have good offerings.

Asus eee and HP mininote sound like they may do the trick - although the small netbooks tend to have small keypads as well, which may be a pain if you are used to typing on a full-sized keyboard. The screen is also smaller in size.

Anyway, both of the above are usually offered in the classified on a regular basis - just test one at Fortress first to make sure you are happy with the shrunken format.

Personally I don't like Netbooks at all. Underpowered, annoyingly small keyboard, and worst of all a tiny screen. If you want a computer that size, get an iPad. Then again, my mother likes hers so I guess it's a question of taste.

There are a couple of second hand laptop shops on the upper floor of the Wan Chai Computer Centre.

My husband uses a Thinkpad but I was considering something even smaller... but as you pointed out, netbooks have their drawbacks.

My husband also saw the latest iPad and thought it was very lacking in features.

I guess my best bet is to go to the computer centre and try some new netbooks first to see if I like it. It's the same trap I always fall into: I look for something small, then realise it's too small and doesn't have enough features, and then end up with something big!

Anyone out there with positive reviews of their Netbook?

Thinkpads come in several sizes. The smallest is the X Series. However it is not that cheap since it is designed and built for road warriors. Durable as all hell, which comes at a cost.

What features is it lacking, does he think? Most iPod/iPad features are based on downloadable apps. They don't come with a huge amount out of the box.

My mother likes her Asus. ;)

My husband's Thinkpad is quite small. Thinkpads are very manly and businesslike though. Think I would prefer something more "feminine" (bet you didn't think about that as one of the required specifications! hahaha)

Your mother sounds very tech-savvy and cool. I should check out the Asus... ;)

Re the iPad: hubby thought it was very heavy, no camera. Can't remember what else he said. He's interested, but not impressed enough with the first generation.

HAHA. I don't know about manly. Businesslike certainly. That's their segment. ;) I have seen pink laptops. None of them made by Lenovo. Then again you can have your machine custom painted.

My mother is indeed very tech-savvy. BTW Lenovo (makers of Thinkpad) also have a very neat netbook-size machine called the IdeaPad. Silly name but I though it was a nice unit.

I agree about the iPad having no camera. Really annoying. I don't know about heavy. It weighs about as much as the lighter netbooks. For what they've packed in there, the weight could probably not be much less.

Love our Macbook Air. Very thin and transportable. Not sure about use of Microsoft office though. In my experience of Macs (recently) they don't handle Microsoft Word very well.
