brown rusty tap water and what to do about it?

We've just moved and our place is on the 1/F which I think is why if we run a bath it's filled with brown water with sediments of rust (or something like rust). We had the heater changed as we thought it was that but it seems it is the pipes. Anyone know of a solution for this? I haven't seen filters for the bath before, and can anyone advise on water filter experiences in general. We usually boil the drinking water but boiling wont' get rid of the rust!! scary! any advice appreciated. cheers

For drinking at least, get a water filter. There are lots of Brita filters sold at places like Wing On.

also let it run for a while. quite often clears things out

else only the replacement of the pipes helps

I have never heard of drinking water being anything but clear. Only our "flushing" water is sometimes rusty, when management have been cleaning tanks, but this is non potable anyway.

Speak to your neighbours, ask if they have the same problem, then speak to landlord.

It's quite normal here if you are living in an old building. We have the same in our building. We run the water for a short while which helps to clear it. You could ask the management to clean the tanks more regularly which does help. The only way to get rid of it is to change the pipes which I should imagine is a huge job. Its not harmful in anyway. You can get filters for the bath taps and you will find them in Lockhart Road.

thanks all. I am 99% sure that my landlord would laugh if I asked for the pipes to be changed sadly. I will head to Lockhart Rd for some filters thanks. You can't see it's brown when you just run it, only when the bath fills up and then you can see it and the residue/dirt/rust at the bottom of the tub.

For drinking water you should look at a filter system that attaches to the tap. This will clean rust etc and also bacteria.

There's a specialist water filter shop in Wan Chai on one of the roads that link Lockhart and Hennessy road. I think it is Flemming Road.
