SCMP-online or on-paper?

I think the SCMP serves a place as a small local paper providing HK-specific news... but as a source of top global editorial and opinion it's not in the same league as FT, IHT and other major global news sources (that said, I dont think it aspires to be... I dont think SCMP is not circulated widely outside of HK).

I'm not a subscriber because I am not that interested in stories like 'the dai pai dong closed on Peel St.' and if I was I'd pick up The Standard or check CNNGO FOC... I'm not interested in China news (and there are much better free online sources)...

Again SCMP is ok for local news ... but when there are so many other great news sources out there and only so many cups of coffee one can drink in a day one has to narrow things down...

agree with Ed...local news is of very little interest to me, so I'd rather pay nothing and read the Standard (Nuri Vitacchi and the Sports pages basically) and get my international news fix online

If you bought the SCMP for the past years and just read Jake's old Monitor column you would have been encouraged to buy property in SARS (around Easter 03 I think was the column) and encouraged to sell your HK shares late 2008 just before things went south - I think he sold HSBC above HK$150. Both suggestions together would have made you financially secure, for a few hundred HKDs a year. Everyone says no one knew, Jake did! Plus you'd get a few other laughs along the way. The online version is fair value and they give you extra days each year.

And hands up who followed his advice....
