IB Programme Primary School in Quarry Bay

ORIGINAL POST

We are moving to Quarry Bay in 2 months. My daughter is 5 and we need to find her an IB programme school in Quarry Bay/Taikoo area. She is currently accepted in RC but that doesn't help to get her in ESF.

Any good suggestions?

Thanks

actually niether of the above mentioned schools offer the IB PYP program that your 5 year old would be in (tho I'm sure you already knew that...)

pending the result of their World School accreditation visit, QBS might be offering it, presumably in the 2010-11 school year...

Hi Michelley and funbobby,

Thank you for responding.

I'm not sure of kiangsu-chekiang and CIS is too expensive for me even if they offer IB PYP.

QBS does offer IB PYP and is my first choice. However they need residential proof that I live in that region before we can enroll. The waiting list might also take us 2 years to wait.

We hope to find alternatives.

RC (Renaissance College) is a very good through school, and is under the ESF umbrella as a PIS. PIS schools operate under a few different regulatory rules than traditional ESF, but the quality of education etc is similar to ESF. RC also benefits from the ESF training and collaborative network unlike independent international schools. The added perk for RC is high quality Chinese learning for both native and non-native kids. RC is far ahead other ESF in this area, without sacrificing the overall English. If you select RC you can also live in much cheaper areas of HK ranging from Saikung, Maonshan, Taipo etc (and these areas do also have expats and larger housing). Later on if you choose, you could still transfer to traditional ESF which would depend on your catchment (Shatin College or KGV).

Regarding other IB PYP choices on HK Island, excluding ESF, the other international schools are very pricey. Options for IB PYP include Canadian International School and Hong Kong Academy.

If you just want a "reasonable priced" school in QB area while waiting a space at QBS (can take up to 2 years..... but could be much quicker since some families pay multiple deposits) kiangsu-chekiang (KCIS) does have an international section but I don't believe the primary is IB. There is also Delia School of Canada (DS), and the Korean International School (KIS) English section. In terms of affordability, international style education with languages, and quality of programme, I would personally prefer RC to KCIS, DS, KIS.

Victoria Shanghai Academy in Shum Wan (Aberdeen) is another option for HK Island PYP while you wait to get into ESF...

If you are accepted into RC, you should strongly consider moving closer to that school and accepting a longer commute for work...it is quite a good school, at least on par with ESF if not better, and as stated by others, waiting lists can't make the whole 'finding a school' process extremely frustrating and discouraging...
