Warning - Phone prank gets out of hand

ORIGINAL POST

This just happened to me, so now I am warning all of you.

Someone calling himself Alex called my cellphone, claiming we had met a few months ago in an MTR station. His caller id number was blocked. He said he was hiking in Sai Kung and he needed me to open a website with a map on it to give him directions.

The site he gave me was www.sourmath.com. Do not open this webpage! It is a viral site which will crash your computer!

My computer has crashed so badly that my entire hard drive is corrupt. All my data is lost, including every photo of the first two years of my daughters life.

Words cannot express the rage I am feeling, I have filed a report of criminal nusance with the HK Police, with the date and time of the cell phone call.

If I meet 'Alex' before they do, it won't end well for him. I don't know how this jerk got my number, or why he chose to victimise me, but the damage he has done is massive. I look forward to returning the favour.

Please report it to the police if you are another of his victims. If they can build enough of a case, and catch him of course, they put him away for 6 to 12 months.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I personally would have found it strange if someone I didn't remember phoned me with such a request. Surely if one were in difficulties, there would be many friends or acquaintances to call up for help before resorting to calling someone you met in an MTR station a few months ago. Don't you think?

Good point Shoe Girl, but the call actually woke me up and I was a little confused by the whole thing. Normally I would have been a little sharper. Having said that I do try to help out where I can, so who knows.

After this I certainly won't be doing anything to help strangers again. I can only hope that when this Alex jerk really needs help that no one lifts a finger (except to flip him off).

I didn't realise he'd woken you up. I see. Yes, it's a pity there are idiots like him around. I really don't know what pleasure anyone derives from doing things like this. I hope the police catch him, but unfortunately the chances of that happening may be slim.

Have you spoken to any IT specialists to see if they can help retrieve some of your lost data?

Yeah, it's beyond me why people do these things. My wife works in a bank and she is asking her IT guys about it now. I really hope I can get my photos back. I should have them backed up, I know:-)

Thanks for taking the time to chat, it's good to know there are nice people out there as well.

Supersam, I'm intrigued now. Can you share with us what story he said to you? Was it about being lost hiking as well? What time did he call you?

I think El Lobo and Supersam are 'good friends'. I also think that this little posting is a social experiment to see just how many people actually visit the site after being told not to.

El Lobo - The Wolf in Spanish, was a movie about a man who infiltrated ETA so as to destabilise ETA internally. He protected the Spanish from terrorism. Isn't it so good that now El Lobo is protecting Hong Kong.

I do not believe anyone would be so stupid as to receive a phone call and then open up their computer and go to a site when told to by a person they 'possibly met' at the MTR. It is beyond belief - who does this type of thing???. If the story is true how did this Alex know that Le Lobo was near a computer?

McAfee, Nortons (Symnatec) and Trend Micro have nothing listed for the site mentioned. I am not saying they miss things and these companies are perfect, but it is strange that three major virus protection companies have no information about the above site.

The stupidity of some computer users never ceases to amaze me. So I can well believe it. However I do agree with the rest of your post.

Firstly to Bob the Builder, I have no idea who Supersam is, I was just trying to warn people that there is a nutcase out there. How this creep got my name and phone number I don't know.

Who doesn't have broadband on 24 hrs a day now?

bob/axptguy. Yes logging onto the site was stupid, stupid, stupid but you don't expect to be called by some stalker who has your name and phone number, and to be hassled like this. I was caught off guard. Had this Alex a$$hole sent me an email saying the same thing, I would have reported it as spam and deleted it without a second thought.

As for this being a 'social experiment'... I can't imagine the type of psychopath who would conduct such an 'experiment, what benefit they would gain from it, or how cynical you would need to be to even suggest it. Anyone who logs onto that site after being warned needs professional medical help. You are welcome for the heads up, by the way.

And spare me the amateur psychoanalysis over my choice of account id, coming from someone who calls himself 'bob the builder' it's insulting.

As far as I'm concerned I have shouted a warning about this Alex reject. End of story. Like I said in my original post, am done with helping strangers.

Supersam, he sounds like a real creep.

Are you referring to the AsiaXpat classified?

I recently saw an ad on AsiaXpat for some shoes. The ad was posted by someone with a female's name. When I called the number, it was a male who answered and said that he was the person who'd put the ad in, and suggested I could go around to his flat to look at the shoes. I thought it was a bit suspicious and said I'd prefer to meet up in a public place, but he was insistent I go to his flat. So I told him to forget it, I was not interested. Afterwards, for a few weeks, he kept phoning and leaving text messages at all hours of the day. So I guess you have to be careful whether you're selling or buying on these classified ads.

No wonder you're called supersam if you can carry three-piece suites and dining tables etc. around the MTR system ;-)

That same "Alex" called me a couple of weeks ago with an unknown number. I couldnt hear properly and I thought it was a long lost friend of mine who is living in Paris. He kept asking me for help and that he was lost. I said ok, I dont know you but I will help you. He asked me to go on my computer and search google maps and he was lost in Sai Kung. He said type the word "tree"... I'm thinking to myself WTF??? I said I had never been to Sai Kung. He said I know an easier way... go to this website sourmath.com. Stupid me, I opened it and couldnt get rid of the site!!!! It was porn and I was so upset. It was a bad day for me and I started crying. I had been going through a lot that day, fighting with hubby, and hormones racing from being pregnant. I broke down crying and hung up on him!!!!! I hope this guy gets caught!!!!!!!
