i am planning on bringing a US sat system when i return to shanghai. all US sat systems require connection to a US line/telephone number. i can do that with something called a "magic jack" for my mac and/or pc. the next issue is whether or not i can get a US sat tv signal? i know that phils sat tv being sold to expats is a dish network sister company. there is a south african sat system being sold around shanghai too.

you def. won't get dish network's signal in china...us TV sats are in geo-stationary orbit over the us, and being on the other side of the planet, there is NO CHANCE that you will pick up any signal from a us sat... talk to the guys selling sat service in shanghai for an idea of the signals you can pick up there
FYI, from DN's FAQ....they are prohibited from distributing their signal anywhere but the continental us, hawaii, alaska and puerto rico...

thanks for your info. i knew it would be impossible. i had one of those "dream sat" (from phils). from what remember the last time i visited their website..they were a sister company of DN. so i thought if one had the right equipment ie.. DN receiver, LNB and dish...one could get a US DN signal in china.
anyhow, i think i'll buy a sling box by tivo. i know a few people in shanghai who use sling box. but i believe you are not in command of your tv watching. you are at the mercy of who ever is watching tv here????
