Can anyone help?

I just moved here, I'm on my own. My boyfriend lives in the UK, about to move to NY. I feel really lost, I'm not sure I like HK - it's just so weird. I want so much to embrace the life out here, I'm just not getting it. Does anyone else feel the same?

I reckon any place is what you make of it. I don't know what you do here - working, studying, something else? - but if you are not getting social stimulation, you will probably find yourself dissatisfied. HK can be a very isolating place, despite all the people!


I recommend getting involved in as much as you can. Take up a sport or two - you will find interesting and like-minded people. Take up volunteer work - you can do even an hour or two a week, and you get to meet other volunteers (more opportunity to make friends, socialise) as well as people from disadvantaged backgrounds, which is a humbling experience that also provides significant personal reward (not even mentioning the enormous reward other people get from you helping out). Even general social groups that meet up for coffee, dinner, social events like dances or games nights.


Humans are typically a social bunch, and when you find yourself alone somewhere, it can be quite dissatisfying. When you are amongst a huge population, it masks the fact that you are alone, and it's easy to overlook your social needs.


That all said - I totally understand your point of view... there have been times when I have felt the same way (and I know others who have too). I have preoccupied myself with a combination of work, study, language classes, volunteer work, sport and social events, and when that's all going on, I have a much higher level of satisfaction. I fully recommend it.


Give it a red-hot go before you move on... there are some great people to meet here, and some genuinely interesting things about HK.
