Hi. I recently added a password to access my wi-fi as a security measure. About two days later, the signal basically stopped working and you can only pick it up if you stand right beside the Buffalo air station.
Could these two things be connected? Or is it possible someone is blocking our signal (and how would I find out)?
Thank you.

Theoretically, you will get some performance degradation but it should hardly be noticeable. More likely, as you suspect, someone in the area is interfering with the signal. This is most likely inadvertent.
1. See if there is new firmware for your router. http://www.buffalo-asia.com/cgi-bin/support/index.cgi?country=hk . If the firmware can be upgraded, there might already be a fix built in.
2. Manually change the WiFi channel. It is set to "auto" by default. Try a couple of different ones and see if it helps.

Wow, thanks very much for your quick response. I'll try those things.

Darn, these things didn't seem to work. I called the Buffalo people and they suggested I need a new router. Does that sound right?

Well, if they're offering you a replacement I would take it.
One more thing: heat. Surprisingly many problems can be solved by making a router run a bit cooler. Are the vents covered? Is it sitting in a cabinet? Is it sitting on some piece of hot equipment?
