I arrived for the first time in Hong Kong on February 6, 2009, USA Passport and given 90 days stay. Since that time i have gone out to Philippines twice on less than 21 days each and other times to Macau and back.
When I re-entered from Macau this last trip, immigration informed me that when my present visa ends June 28, 2010, I could not exit and re-enter from Macau. This is no problem as that is not my intention.
What I really need is a 10 day extension beyond June 28th, I have never requested an extension before.
Does anyone have any idea whether the immigration might allow me a 10 day extension and advise me what kinds of reasons they likely accept from someone having been here as long as i have.

Well
that would depend on what grounds you are seeking extension..
also what the immigration would have told is that you may have problem getting another 90 day stamp, i doubt he would have outright told you that you wont get another stamp at all....
or at most next time you enter they will give you a shorter duration visa to allow you to pack up and leave..
but at the end it is still at the discretion of immigration officer to decide how many days he would allow you or doesn't allow at all.
and if you are white guy with a USA passport that situation of an outright refusal is pretty unlikely..

I am curious as to what might be some of the commonly accepted reasons immigration allows for a short extension of a 10 day stay? Thanks for sharing.
