We are planning on going back to Canada for a few weeks in July/August. The flight is 15 hours and then we have a 4 hour drive.
Our daugther will be 18 months old then. We have been giving her a variety of food all homemade (and without salt). I was wondering if I should bring some prepacked meals with us as well as home cooked food in a themos. The problems with bring cooked food in a themos - are there is a limit on how much we can bring and I am concerned with whether the food will go bad after a few hours.
Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

It's not a problem. The liquid rule has an exception for "a reasonable amount" of baby food. Tell the guards before going through security and they will check your bag separately. If the guards are really picky they'll make you taste the food.
As for it going bad, get a small insulated carrier and throw in an ice pack. In any case unless it is quite hot not even fresh milk goes bad in 18 hours. Not to worry.
BTW you don't need to bring special water for baby. There's plenty of clean water on the plane, both hot and cold.

Cara,
Love to have you to come along! I am dreading the flight and drive - but looking forward to being home for 3 weeks. It will be so much fun for our daughter.

We are going to Ottawa. We are flying into Toronto and then driving to Ottawa. It will be so much better when you go to Vancouver next time.

Just wanted to add that I am travelling too. Thanks for answering my questions people - before I even asked them!
My baby is 6 months and I have been giving him pureed fresh food. IT will be a bit of a risk serving up jar food. I will be buying a few between now and next week to test him on it.
Good to know about taking some of my own though.

OAShanghai, you might want to look at the Ella's Organic's pouches of baby purees. Much lighter to carry than jars and personally I think they taste much more "real". Bumps to Babes and Marketplace sell them.

I buy Ella's Organic food and Organix ready made food - my baby loves them. I use them for when we go out and on flights. You can bring home-made food on the flight but you won't be able to bring them into the country you are flying to.
I would suggest that you buy the jar food to take with you on the flight just in case.

Why wouldn't you be able to do that? The only thing most countries care about is raw food. As long as it is cooked you're ok.
In any case you can put home made food in old baby food jars.

OAshanghai, that is weird. I mean I can see the "logic" but I don't feel any safer.
Bottom line, try to get your babies to eat adult food ASAP. ;) On the plus side there's almost always bread.

Dear All,
Just got back from our trip and wanted to share our experience - hopefully it will be helpful to other parents.
My 18 month old daughter did not like the baby jar food they provided on the plane - so on our way to Canada I asked for just steamed rice (which they have in first class) the flight attendant were happy to make the rice for us.
On our return flight, I brought two home cooked meals in thermal flasks with us. As for the third meal, I asked for steamed rice again - and our daughter was happy with that and whole wheat bagels that they had on the flight.
I brought extra formula - one extra meal than anticipated and that proved to be a good thing.
I did not need as many diapers as I thought we would and the flight attendant also provided quite a few diapers.

i have revcently done 2 long haul (12 hours) with by 22 month old - i found that a small tub of peas and a small tub of macaroni are good as they concentrate on lifting it out and its a decent meal to last them a good few hours

HF - which airline did you travel that provided diapers - did you have to ask? I have never been given any diapers mind you have never requested either..
It would be great to know for sure they have a few of the right size - my fear is always a delayed flight and you get stuck with no diapers so I usually take whatever we would normally use within lets say a day + a few extras - but they are bulky.
I found same for baby food - the airlines have odd flavours. though normally they do have an apple one which mine would eat. But usually my little one ends up eating part of my meal.

Cathay provides diapers as part of their "baby care package".

Kiwimmc,
It was cathay. They gave me 6 in the baby care package on our way to Canada and 8 on our way back. They provided "L" - I am not sure if they decided that based on the age of our baby (18months) or that is the only size they stock.
On our way to Canada, they gave us 8 bottles of "sweet corn and chicken" and our daughter had one bite. On our way back, there were different choices: pasta sauce, vegetables and chicken and fruit puree.
