Hi,
Quick question about the above...
I have the Ergo... I'm due August 30th. Has anyone used the baby insert for the Ergo to carry small babies, and is it easy/comfortable - good for the baby. Most importantly, it will be middle of summer.
I'm just wondering whether or not to buy one.
When my first was born, I didn't use a baby carrier until 3 or 4 months of age, when the baby could support herself. But this time around I'll have a toddler. So if toddler is in the push chair, I'll have to use the carrier for the baby...
Actually, the most likely scenario would be me struggling to carry the toddler in the carrier (she'll be 2 yrs) and putting the baby in the stroller, because toddler likes being carried... sigh.

In my opinion, your wee one will be too hot in HK in August with the carrier plus insert. The good thing is that the Ergo does a great job with the toddler on your back, and it is pretty easy for a 2yo to climb in and out. I can still carry my 3.5yo in the backpack position pretty comfortably for quite a long time. Just be careful to not strain yourself, as you will still be recovering from birthing....
btw, my #2 outgrew the baby insert by 2months, and didn't really like the Ergo after that until he was about 6mo: he found it hard to straddle his legs so wide, but in a pinch, I found that I could carry him in my arms with his sister in the backpack for those times that she was too tired to walk and we were without pram.

Hi Z, thanks for your response! It gives me some great feedback.
Sounds like no point to bother with the baby insert then. I've never carried my toddler on my back. I think I probably need to practise having her get in and out because I can't manage to get her in when I'm on my own.
And yes, the Ergo is not good for younger babies because it makes their legs straddle too wide. I used the Baby Bjorn until baby outgrew it.
Thanks!

I did not buy a baby insert for my ergo but that's because I have a bjorn as well (both left over from first one) You can use the Ergo to carry a young baby in the "sleeping in your arms" position to - I do with my 4 month old, just need to support his head that is hanging out the end......it's not an official position but works well as he does not like sleeping with legs so wide apart but the ergo is so much more comfortable for me than the bjorn.
I also find that if you take a pushchair out the older child demands to sit in it and you do end up carrying the baby all the times. My 3.5 year old positively resents not being able to sit in the pushchair at will...he will happily walk though if I am carrying the baby, I just tell him he is too heavy for mum to carry, works most of the time, but do expect tantrums, sigh.

don't know what part of HK you are in, but when we were expecting #2 we bought a Phil&Ted double pram. Turns out it's a nightmare to navigate LKF [prob true for just about any pram], but it's a dream here in BJ -- there was a couple of months where the baby was no longer satisfied to ride flat below with his sister on top, but couldn't hold his head up well enough to sit in the back seat, but fortunately for us, this was the dead of winter and we weren't taking long walks.

Hi Z,
Yes the Phil and Teds is fantastic and I have looked at it many times. Unfortunately, I live in Ap Lei Chau which is pretty much the urban part of HK. I think the stroller would just be too big. I do think about getting it though, because even if I just use it within the local area to go for walks, maybe it will be useful. So I thought I would wait until #2 is born to see how things go...

Hi,
I gave birth to my first baby in mid-May and I had already purchased the ergo and the infant insert.
My baby was very tiny and so I could not use the ergo (even with the infant insert!) until last week, but I am now using it every day, with the insert. I have to say it is like a magical snooze machine for my baby, which is great! I went out for about 1 and a half hours the day before yesterday when it was about 32 degrees, was very worried about the heat, but actually found my baby to be absolutely fine and sweat free for the duration of the trip, even though I was dripping wet around the waist band! I live on a boat so to get anywhere I have to catch a sampan into shore, then I caught the minibus (5 minute ride) to the shops, did my grocery shopping, paid a few bills and did some other bits and pieces, chatted to people I met and then returned home.
I wonder if the light coloured calico fabric actually helps keep baby a little cooler than you would think....?
Anyway, I will have no hesitation taking her out in the warm weather, knowing that she is so comfortable. I think if you are going to be out and about for a long time, in the really hot weather it probably wont matter much which carrier you are using, baby will get warm.
Certainly in September, when you are likely to start using your carrier, it will be cooler than July anyway.
Good luck!
C

Hi C, thanks for your reply. You're right... I probably won't be going out and about with the new baby much in the first month anyway!
