We would love to take our family of 6 on a holiday where there is good safe swimming for kids, snorkelling, kayaking... But would really like somewhere private and quiet with as few people around as possible! Doesn't have to be Thailand even..Any recommendations?

(We are thinking of the first two weeks in August)

THANKS!

I would recommend Koh Samui, non-stop flight from HK under 3 hours. I have a beachfront villa to recommend, it is on the luxury side. The villa is very private, but in the meantime, it is part of a five star hotel, so you will get all the services. www.karmavilla32.com

Koh Chang, White Sand Beach Resort

Oceanfront small bugalows, no luxury but i loved the fact that you literally are one step away from the ocean waves

"Koh Chang, White Sand Beach Resort" I stayed there a few years ago. Koh Chang is is a nice looking island- it reminds me of Koh-Samui in the 80s. Not much to do, nice water- cheap as chips.

what about Sanya in China. August you will be looking at similar weather to HK, but very beautiful. We have only stayed at the Ritz Carlton, but there are plenty of resorts, many friends also recommend the Mandarin Oriental. Beautiful beach and watersports (the Ritz Carlton and many adjoining hotels line this perfect beach). We have been there twice. Easy flight (under 2 hours), beautiful resorts, kid friendly beaches, great food, fabulous pools (many kid friendly) and quite a few things to do outside the resorts. Adjoining the Ritz Carlton is the Marriott, Hilton and many other hotels which go along this beach. I hear about the Mandarin Oriental it is absolutely fabulous but the beach is not as good, but the pools make up for it.

sorry komo, but if you call sanya a 'perfect beach', then you obviously have not been to some of the nicer beaches in asia yet

cookie09, you are right - perfect was probably the wrong term. But we did find it a very nice beach. We have done a lot of travel around Asia, Australia, Pacific Islands etc, and our kids had just as much fun in Sanya as they did at some of the more remote islands. Was just trying to provide another option.....

Hhhm, when you have six kids, you really want the travel to be convenient as well. But when you put convenience and beach together... it ends up being a place that lots of people visit! So it might be tricky to find a quiet beach.

I would focus on places that are easy to reach... but perhaps you can find a quieter beach within those places...

For example:

Cebu, Philippines, very easy to reach by plane.

Phuket - yes, it's very busy but there are loads of beaches on the island and surely you can find a beach hotel that's away from the hustle and bustle.

Koh Samui - lots of beaches to choose from.

Also Micronesia - Palau, Guam etc.

Be interested to hear where you eventually choose!

Thanks for all your suggestions. We have decided on the Philippines. Flights are so much cheaper and I think I have found somewhere quiet and unspoilt. It's too short flights then quite a long drive but I think it will be worth it....

There are two beachfront houses here, we are staying at both. Looks :-)
