I have an HTC ... what I do when I am in Bali is change my CSL chip for a local pre-paid chip... the only issue is that you will have a different tel number... you can still get online...
Normally you need to have an Indo ID card to get a prepaid but just ask your hotel concierge to sort this out for you...

If you just want to be able to make calls, buy a cheap phone and take it on holiday with you. I have an iPhone and the settings to switch off automatic updates/downloads/whatever is complex (who said Apple is user-friendly?)
But when I go on holiday, I just take the cheapo phone so that I am contactable but don't get stung for data charges (that's where it gets expensive). Plus I'm not worried about it being lost/stolen.

Same here dadda. I had a huge bill when I went to Thailand once and it was just from turning my phone on. So the following trip (to India) I went through all the settings and thought I'd turned them all off so nothing would be downloaded ... but I ended up with another huge bill. On both trips I didn't go online or check email.
Hence why I bought a cheap as chips phone so that I can call people or people can reach me but there's no way there will be any data charges because the phone is so basic.

Not hard at all. Settings->General->Network->Data Roaming to "Off". It's even the default setting. If you don't answer or make calls either, you should get no roaming charges.
Having said that, I would do like Ed. Get a pre-paid sim card and pop it in. You can still use WiFi.
If I don't want to get a sim, I turn on Airplane Mode, then turn on WiFi so I can surf and use Skype in the hotel/villa. Again, no charges since the cellular bits are off.

I always take my iphone with me overseas and have never paid for data roaming.
I had heard from friends who had been stung previously.
I do as axpatguy38 says just turn data roaming to "OFF" and then I just use WiFi to get my emails and surf the web. Problem solved! Phone charges are reasonable and I can keep same contact number.

I do the same as JJChan when I am traveling and have never had any problem.

i take my iPhone overseas and fiddle with it to try an stop unwanted "updates" roaming "offers" etc. . . when i return home, i get a fat bill for all these charges. I want to be able to take the phone with me - that is why i bought it. And I want to be able to recieve calls and sms's. Is there no way to recieve calls / sms's without being charged ridiculous amounts? Is there another plan i can use with iPhone that is more reasonable?

DSL as mentioned earlier just turn off data roaming which will allow you to down load emails etc on wifi. I use free wifi provided in the hotels we stay at. This will allow you to just pay for phone calls and you will not be charged for data roaming. Call up your provider and explain that you do not wish to use or be charged for data roaming and they will tell you the same as I have as it was my provider that explained it to me. They can also advise you on the phone charges. You can also ask you to email you the info so that if you are charged then you have a come back.
