I need to find an Honest, English Speaking and Inexpensive travel agent on the Island line to help me book occasional flights around Asia. Someone who is whiling to look for the best deal and not over charge me because I am western and presumed rich.
The last couple of agents I have tried were recommendations by friends and co-workers and I was massively over-quoted. (one quoted me $7,700 HKD to fly between Beijing and Xi'an, a two-hour flight, but then I found the same flight online for $2,000 HKD.)
Does anyone have a great inexpensive travel agent they could recommend to an expat on a budget? Thank you!

I think you have your answer. On-line.
There are two types of travel agent. Those who have rents and salaries to pay and those who work independently.
Most independent 'travel agents' are amateurs who book on line and then bunce the price. The good agents who have been at it a while, well I have only found Chinese speakers.
The larger agencies can get lower than online prices, but you need to be prepared to phone several times and gamble on the price fluctuating. Again you need to speak Chinese.
If you book online, at least you have control and don't feel like you are being shafted. Ctrip is one of the better online agents.
