The location should have no significance. It is not a network issue, it is an antenna issue and thus inherent in the actual phone.
A simple sleeve, or even a piece of tape at the right location, will solve the issue.

Short answer: yes! That's what I meant by "sleeve". Sorry I was unclear with what I meant.
The problem is related to how the antenna, which runs around the phone, comes into contact with the hand in certain ways. The hand is conductive so this leads to undesirable currents which worsen reception. A rubber case will insulate the antenna from the hand.
If you want the whole story in detail, AnandTech did a very scrupulous test. http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review/2 . See the "signal attenuation" table about half waydown. They showed that even with these issues, the iPhone 4 has great reception.

Actually the antenna is VERY good. It surpasses most other phones. The problem is when you hold the phone in certain locations your hand wreaks havoc with the function.

Yep, there is a waiting list. But can confirm the phone is good, in fact super fast. Best display out there as well. With the updated camera and video it's become a good all round media machine now, something it sadly started out not to be.

I used the rubber case in SmV Network... the performance is OK.. no significient change in speed and receiption.. I also done a comparsion with previous iphone3G, the speed in iphone is so fast... from 2-5M... the i[phone3G is 1-2M...
i love my iphone/..
