My baby will be 6 months soon. Can anyone recommend a good book on how to start feeding solids and what to feed according to age. Recipes would also be useful.
Thanks for your help.

You don't really need a book. You are the one who knows your child.
- Start with one spoon or two a day and work your way up slowly.
- Mash corn (you have to get rid of the husks), parsnip, potato, banana. Things like that. Just boil (if needed) and mash.
- Careful with things like banana because they affect digestion. So keep an eye out.
- One new food for several days at a time.
- If little one doesn't like a food, retire it for a a week and then try again. He/she will have forgotten all about it and may love it.
- Give the solid when baby is alert and eager, not in the evening.
- Pay attention to what your child is "telling" you.
- As baby gets older and more used to solids, you can try more complex foods and less mashing. By the time my #2 was 12 months, she was gumming grilled chicken fillets. No mashing required. As cara will no doubt tell you, by 12 months baby can eat what you eat as long as it has the correct soft consistency.

I like Annabel Karmel. However I think she exaggerates presentation. While food shaped like stars or snails is fun, it is a bit more work than necessary for everyday meals.

thks for the advice
axptguy38-when you say try a food for several days, do you mean 3-4 or 6-7 days (the latter seems a long time but i guess what's the rush i dont want my bb to get an allergic reaction).
My husband is Chinese and i'm told to feed congee and then add meat, vegetables etc., but i dont eat congee let alone know how to cook it, it does sound and look nutritious though (but not tasty!). So something like AK would be good (she has so many books its difficult to choose one!), though she seems to be rather quick in trying new foods e.g. curries, seafood.

People in East Asia feed congee because that's what they traditionally had around. In Sweden, for the same reason, we feed root vegetable purees like parsnip and carrot.
BTW don't give honey until 12 months. Some say 24.

You may want to try Gina Ford's Contented Little Baby's Book of Weaning. I found it very useful and also includes some simple recipes.
