We will be soon in HK and I would like to know where would be the best place to live with 2 teenagers that will attend the Canadian international school in Aberden, and husband that will work in Central (pacific place). I would like the kids to be quite independent and not always relying on taxis....so should be an apt placed near common tranport...and if possible with tennis courts.

Well, HK is quite compact and there is a lot of public transport so it is not that big of an issue to get around.

Given CDNIS I would say you should look at Pok Fu Lam, Cyberport and South Side (Stanley, Repulse Bay, Shouson Hill). The larger buildings tend to have tennis courts, for example Bel Air, The Manhattan, 109 Repulse Bay Road, Ruby Court.

You will be paying a premium for the facilities in those buildings so an option is to live somewhere without facilities and get a club membership instead.

Thank you...is it then better to have apartments not too far up the hills (for school buses),

Hills don't really affect such things per se. HK Island is hilly all over and public transport has simply adapted. I would say that on most of the island you won't have to walk more than a couple of hundred meters to get to some sort of bus stop or minibus route. Even "remote" places such as Shek O get double decker service.

School bus service is mainly about the route having enough customers. Email the school and ask them for their school bus route list. A big school like CDNIS will have very comprehensive bus service. Some of the buses will go on quite small streets.

For public transport, you can check the NWFB/Citybus website bus stop search. Just look for buildings or streets http://www.nwstbus.com.hk/routes/routesearch.aspx?searchtype=3&intLangID=1 . Note that place names like "Shouson Hill" and "Repulse Bay" are not technically districts even if they are referred to as such colloquially. Both those are part of Southern. Note also that minibuses and KMB buses are not listed. Green minibus service (really just bus service with smaller vehicles) is very extensive.

CDNIS has a great school bus service. Don't need to worry about that.

The school will have a list of drop-off and pick up places.

Phone the school and ask for the schedule.

The school usually will have a student from your child's year show you around for at least the first 2 weeks. The student will most likely be well liked by the other students and teachers.

He/she will help your child adjust to the school, answer any questions your child will have and introduce them to new friends.

HK has a great transportation system. Lots of buses, minibuses, MTR and taxis.

However, places are small compare to North American standard unless your company provides you with a HUGE housing allowance.

Popular areas are mid-levels, Pokfulam, Repulse Bay, Stanley.

These areas are on the pricey side.

Other areas where the apartments are smaller are:

Tai Koo Shing, South Horizons, Sham Wan Towers (quite a few CDNIS teachers live here).

good luck.

Thanks for all the advice. I will arrive on Friday and start searching with all the good tools in hand...waiting now for the school on the bus routes. Have seen the website..and true, apartments are small to our standards..hope to get all my furniture and stuff in!

Listed apartment sizes should be taken with a pinch of salt. If it says 2000 square feet that probably includes the apartment's "share" of stairwells and lobbies. So the actual living area tends to be lower. The newer the apartment, the lower the called "efficiency" tends to be. That is how much you really "get" for a given nominal area.

Also the helper's room and bathroom, small while they are, do take up space.
