Kindergarten for 2.5 yr old

Desperately need some parenting advice, as school(s) are starting in few weeks.

Our son is 2.5 years old and has been accepted by an international kindergarten for its morning session and an afternoon program in a local school. They both offer 3 hours of schooling every day in English and Mandarin accordingly.

We are having a hard time trying to decide if we should send him to both schools. He started going to nursery program really early so there shouldn’t be any problem adjusting to school environment. The problem is he’s still taking 1.5 hr nap every day, taking the afternoon program means he has to give up his nap. I know most kids stop taking nap by 3 years of age, but my real question is – is it too much to have 6 hrs. of school at this age?

Thanks a lot!

I would say do the morning session and skip the afternoon. If he needs his nap he needs his nap. There's really no need for all day at this age. Heck, lots of kids don't even go to kindy and they are fine too. He's not going to fall behind or anything.

You can re-evaluate whether to go up to six hours in January or even better next school year.

All kids are different. Some can do 6 hours at that age. Some become zombies. ;)

i would also say do either one.

choose whether you would prefer him in the morning school or the afternoon school.

full day is too much and not necessary (in my opinion).

Haha, the thing is our first choice would have been the mandarin program in the morning if that was available, but he only got accepted to the afternoon program. Since we both work, he would be staying at home with our helper all morning, we figured it might be an option to continue his english program in the morning and go to the local school in the afternoon.

How do kids who only go to afternoon class do? do they go to bed late then wake up late?

Lots of 2½ year olds don't take a nap anymore. Also as you say one can adapt the schedule.

Some things to consider when making this decision:

The nature of the kindys: at this age, it should be mostly structured play with enough adult intervention to teach some socialization skills as well.

How intense your kid's biological clock is. Some kids are very flexible about naps, bedtimes and wake times; others will wake up at 6am regardless of if they went to bed at 7pm or 11pm the previous night.

How much your kid likes to play socially with other kids vs needing some alone time.

One other possible option, would be to hire a mandarin kindy teacher privately. My daughter and her friends do a couple of hours a couple of days a week -- this way we got to hire somebody that we knew had the philosophy that kids should learn incidentally to playing.
