Am hoping that I can obtain some rather basic advice please. I am soon to relocate to HK after spending a number of years living in London. I have been offered a chance to relocate with my current employer to HK, the salary package is circa HKD 91k per month, before bonues. I have no dependants or wife so what I am trying to guage is the standard of living that I can expect when in HK essentially compared to London. I would like to rent a 1 bed room apartment, obvioulsy with wifi etc (basic mod cons) and would like a location that is close to work (Queens Rd Central). Can someone please provide the following information:

1. Rough cost of 1 bed room apartment

2. Cost of internet and electricity per month eg utilities

3. and finally possible locations that go with item 1 above.

Your advice is very much appreciated.

Appreciate your prompt response Cara. With regards to your question I have heard of some areas to live that may be of interest eg midlevels, happy Valley I presume that these are areas that are expat friendly etc. so close to supermarkets etc I would also like a gym and do plan say a 15-20 minute commute and given work etc would like to eat out a couple nighst a week.

HK is quite compact so if you're on the Island you'll have a hard time being far from supermarkets, gyms, restaurants and the like. This is especially true given the comprehensive public transport options.

If you want to live "in town" and close to work, you should look at:

- Midlevels

- Happy Valley

- Some parts of Wan Chai around Queen's Road East

- Kennedy Town

"electricity: depends on: size of flat, number of air-cons, # of hours air cons run, but for just one person, i'd say no more than $500/month (top end)"

Our place is a bit bigger but we pay 3k and know people who pay a lot more. Our air con is mostly off. So I'd say 500-1200 for a two bed in Happy Valley in summer. Less in fall and spring and in between in winter depending on how much you run your radiators.

You will need to buy radiators. HK apartments get ridiculously cold in winter.

You can consider Kennedy Town of HK island which is very convenient for shopping, restaurant and transportation. You can easily to find a 2 bedroom flat for around HK$15,000 and with their own club house downstairs for gym and other activities. Travel time to central or kowloon side only take 15 mins. BTW, I am living there and have some foreign friends living around.
