I have an active 19 month old and we are about to embark on a 10 hour day time flight .. anyone have a suggestion for good travel toy. My babe doesnt really like to sit still so reading books doesnt work, she eats paydough so that isnt ideal, I have tried crayons, but she eats those too and gets v upset if you take them off her. She does like trying to work out how things work and put things together. I am trying to find a couple of things that are not too bulky, heavy, too many parts to get lost (now how hard can that be?) and will hold her interest for a little while. Thanks

will soft toys hold her interest? my baby cousin has a toy eeyore that she is extremely attached to.

i know soft toys don't sound like a whole lot of fun for us, but for a 19 month old (especialy active ones), imagination is a great playmate.

Does she still like shape sorters and the blocks on the spindle? How about something with a lid to open and shut, or one of those peekaboo books?

The best toy is several toys. Attention spans are short at that age so you'll have to find multiple things. DVD player/iPad/etc... will work for a while. Walking up and down the aisle, etc. The trick is to have 3-4 new toys lined up and surprise her with them as time passes.

Nothing will hold her interest for the whole flight at that age. So unfortunately you'll be doing a lot of "work".

BTW you can make playdough with tons of Dettol and salt in it. Keeps the kids from eating it. But still perhaps not ideal. ;)

when we travelled around that age, i got a lot cheap toys from the japanese department stores like sogo, yata, and uny (apita)?

things has lights and sounds, toy camera, toy phone, things like that. they only costs around $40 each and are compact.

i also got a mini crocodile dentist game from toys r us. it's only the size of a keychain, but she can push the teeth and if she pushes the wrong one, it'll snap on her finger.

another thing i got was sticker activity books. or just stickers for her to put on a piece of paper would do.

but definately dvd players, ipad, iphone.....are sure winners!

stickers and plasters - plaster = put on finger or anywhere and watch them try and take it off!!

thanks for suggestions - nice idea about the dettol and salt playdough but she eats - well sucks on those dettol hand wipes so I am not sure she will be put off ;-)

I have got a plan .. just hope I have the time to complete it .. making one of the cloth quiet books so buttons and zips and buckles with themed pages - each page is about an hour to make so that is nap time till we leave used up.

Also putting together a few activity bags based on search on toddler activity bag - eg some pipecleaners, pasta for threading, some things to sort into colours, things to open and close (hairclip, small box etc).

Did get to the japanese store and picked up a couple of little toys. Croc dentist didnt work - she broke it in about 2 mins ;-)

Our last flight a couple of months back she went up and down the aisle waking everyone who was sleeping by hitting them on the legs so I am trying to keep her occupied where I can. Only picked on those with their eyes closed.. ;-0
