internet hang ups

We're currently having issues with our internet connection. Basically, it seems as if the connection is partially cutting out then cutting in again. I say partially because for example, I can be listening to internet radio without interruption, but when i open a new window, i cannot connect, with the normal "safari cannot connect' message, yet the radio is running seamlessly. The same can be said for windows that are currently open - navigating within that site is fine, but when i try and open another window, or tab, it cannot connect, but the other window or tab is still fine.

Initially, I thought it maybe the router, so we've replaced that with new, but to no avail. Typically, when Now visited, it worked fine during their time here, so its clearly something intermittent, and maybe something to do with some settings.

anybody any ideas?

One of the things that most affects Internet connections is MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). Here's how you adjust it in Mac OS: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2532

I would start by adjusting it up by fifty at a time, beginning with 1450. After each adjustment, use it for a few hours and see. It should not need to be higher than 1600 if memory serves. Too high is not good either.

Another thing that happens a lot with PCCW is the absurdly cheap cable they use from wall to modem seems to "decay" at times. Call them and ask them to come out. The tech will change the modem and cut off a couple of cm of cable, then resplice it. That will fix a lot of issues.
