Chai Wan to Yuen Long daily

I'm moving to Hong kong next month and have been alloted a company house in Chai wan. I will be working in the Yuen long/Tuen mun areas. It seems this is a long commute to take each day (public transport). I queried this with my contractors and they said that it is indeed a long way to travel, but stated that this is normal in Hong Kong and Hong Kong staff do it all the time. Is this the case?

Your working in Yuen Long and the company provided you with accomodation in Chai Wan??? Are they playing a joke on you or are they really that stupid?

Is 4 hours a day to work and back on public transport worth it? For me, Not.

Thanks for your replies.

It's worse than I expected, Eek 4 hours commute sounds horrific. I sent an email stating this is not acceptable. Their argument is they have Hong Kong people in the company houses and they commute also (albeit in private cars), so they cannot supply a housing benefit to me as then the locals would likely demand one.

A lot depends on the size of your package, career prospects etc. If it is a good job, with good experience potential, and a good package, buy a car.

It's surprising that they don't offer you closer accommodation to your office, because Yuen Long is very cheap for real estate compared to the rest of HK. Tuen Mun is also cheaper than Chai Wan.

I think your company is being very unreasonable.

Unfortunately the MTR requires numerous changes

Island Line-Admiralty-TST-walk to TST East- West rail to Youn Long/ Tuen Mun

Island Line-Central-walk to Tung Chung Line- Nam Chung-West Rail to Youn Long/ Tuen Mun

Island Line-Admiralty- Mei Foo walk to west rail

Bus

Island Line to Sheung Wan- KMB 968 to Yuen Long (stop is 20m from exit) KMB 96- or 961 to Tuen Mun

As for driving it took me 50 minutes to get from Fairview Park to Shek O but that was leaving at 6 am

All more or less about the same time to get there but yes carzy for a daily commute

Never in a hundred years, would I travel 2 hours just to get to my office. If you work just 8 hours (and nobody really does this) then add on 4 hours, half your life is spent away from your family and friends.

Demand a company driver or perhaps a taxi but still, if the tunnels are busy you will be sitting for a long time.

There are some companies in HK that always take advantage of their staff. Most of these are from the dinosaur era.

Island line- change to Kwun Tong at Quarry Bay- to Prince Edward-change to Tsuen Wan Line to Mei foo- Change to West rail to Yuen Long

Its still a stupid commute and very non-green

Why not keep the place in Chai Wan as a weekend retreat and rent a small placve near to where you work for a few thousand a month.

Hey I was totally the opposite of you! I live in Tuen Mun and worked in Chai Wan and you know what I quit after 3mths!! It was soooooo tiring doing the travelling alone! Dont do it! but if you really what the job then pay the rent to live in Yuen Long/Tuen Mun yourself. You can get 450sqft apartments in TM for $4k a mth.
