Hi all,

I am looking for a laser based tape measure. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Zircon-Ultrasonic-Measure-Laser-Targeting/dp/B00006K017/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1282569320&sr=1-21

I cant say I have even seen a hardware store or chain store in HK. Any advice on where I can pick one up?

Thanks.

Two good hardware stores:

- Stanley Hardwares. Donmark Mansion on the uphill bit of Stanley Main Street by the Wellcome and Post Office.

- 18-22 Tai Yuen Street in Wan Chai. It is on the ground floor but "obscured" by the market stalls.

quite a few hardware stores on Ap Liu street in Sham Shui Po (Dragon Centre MTR Exit-C?) as well, behind the street stalls. Brightly lit and well organized, unlike the jumbled mess of many neighborhood hardware stores. They stock more powertools and specialized hardware like the laser tape you're after.

Saw a good one today at 101 Wellington Street.

As for "jumbled mess", I never bother looking by myself. The attendants know where to find what I need. ;) Then again as you say the selection of specialized tools tends to be small in the small shops.

Thanks guys. Will check :) One in Wanchai had jack and is a typical mom and pop type place.

Anything closer to IFC by chance? I am looking for a quality drill now.

Still agree with funbobby - Sham Shui Po (or Mongkok) is the best place to but your tools. You will get a good price and can look in lots of hardware stores. I know - I tootle down there on a regular basis with my husband, who desperately missed "Bunnings" in Oz.

Drills - maybe better on Reclamation and Shanghai st (south of The Langham) in Mongkok

To be honest, I don't even know what a good drill is. Anything Japanese or German I am guessing. Recommendations welcome! Would be used to punch holes in plaster/concrete to mount pictures and as a screw driver.

stick with Makita and you won't be disappointed. I was never a fan of Bosch, but I have a Bosch non-impact cordless to go with my Makita corded impact drill, and it seems to be decent build quality...

We have a fine Bosch "Professional" but Makita as mentioned is also great. Make sure it is a "hammer drill"/"impact drill" as anything less will not dent the walls.

Don't buy the cheapest one. I think I paid around 500 and it has given sterling service for years to us and our friends. All you need is new drill bits every now and then.

Follow on question. Anyone know a hardware store in the Tung Chung vicinity? After some picture frame hooks with nails.

There is one in the covered food market underneath the Fu Tung shopping center.

Hi Frank, is that opposite the MTR?

Yes, underneath the shoppng mall that's across the road from the MTR station. (the one connected by a pedestrian bridge, on the other side of Citygate).

There's a food market underneath it at ground level, and there's a small hardware store in there, can't miss it. It's certainly not the best hardware store around, but it's the only one I know of in Tung Chung. Good enough for your basic tools and typical hardware needs.

Hi Uncle, found it. They didn't have the hooks I was after. They did have drills but they didn't speak English so was hesitant to buy one without having some questions answered first.

Thanks nonetheless, good to know.

All, just FYI, there are a few hardware stores on Wellington Street in Central (I believe its Wellington, same street as Habibi). I found 3 to be exact and only one would I consider a "real" hardware store - it has lots of powertools and the guy behind the counter spoke excellent English.

Sorry I don't have the name - receipt is in Chinese. Will post its exact location next time I visit.
