Octopus Cards vs Oyster Cards

Maybe a daft question but I have just arrived from the UK (where the equivalent to the Octopus card is the Oyster card) and was wondering if the Octopus card here has the ability to offer all day travel cards for instance or even weekly unlimited travel or does it simply offer a stored value that reduces in value every time you use the card....ie each trip takes say a fixed amount from your card. Does this make sense, for instance in London you can purchase a weekly octopus card that costs a fixed amount with unlimite travel for certain travel zones.

There are neither all day travel cards nor weekly cards as in London. It is simply stored value. Every trip has different cost and that is deducted.

Unlike Oyster cards Octopus cards can also be used for payment at grocery stores, convenience stores, garages and many other outlets. Also it is used for Octopus Reward at Wellcome and others, plus many buildings use it as an access card.

Also the fare you pay using your Octopus Card on trains and buses is typically cheaper than if you paid cash.

some routes do have monthly rates like the West Line from Yuen Long to TST East but I heard that the MTR will stop that soon as it is too problematic to administer.

Some ferry lines have monthly passes. One of the Lamma-Aberdeen ones for example.

Many car parks only take Octopus now.

Octopus offered to license the technology to Red Ken Livingstone when he was Mayor of London, but they decided it could be built quicker and better themselves. In fact it is a rubbish system in comparison to Octopus, has far less applicable uses and cost many multiples more to install and run. Ever wondered why it is called "Oyster"?

I have heard that Octopus will soon be compatible with the Shenzhen system.

I think now all on-street parking meters require octopus. Most vending machines and fast food outlets also have the option of using octopus

The Octopus-only parking is a bit daft- my building has it for guest/taxi, so if I have a pile of luggage and the taxi driver doesn't have money on his Octopus we can't get in the car park! Unless of course we use mine - assuming I took it on holiday- and I drop my bags and then ride back out with him to swipe it on the way out, then walk back to my lobby! By which time I could have walked through the complex with my bags...

It is only daft in the cases you mentioned, like for taxi parking. That just doesn't make sense. Some parking garages do have a 10-15 minute grace period though so as long as there is some money on the Octopus you are fine.

For guest park it does make sense logistically but in my opinion it is a pretty vulgar thing to do. I mean seriously, they need to charge guests to park?!?
