Hello all,
This is actually my first posting on this site but I've been avidly reading most of the rest of the posts!
I've just moved to hong kong with my boyfriend, we'll be staying for about 10 months, and we are currently in the midst of apartment hunting. This has been a frustrating endeavor and I'm hoping to get some advice on this site.
We've been looking at serviced apartments but our mind is that if we spring for a serviced apartment, we'd like it to have true hotel amenities such as a gym, etc. (i.e. no cozy, studio studio, etc). Our budget is around 11,000 k (we bumped it up from 8,500) and I'm wondering what would give us the best bang for our buck!
If we can't find a decent serviced apartment, I would be interested in a nice furnished apartment, preferably somewhere on hong kong island since he has to work near hang hau but we don't want to live so far out. If you have any leads or any suggestions for where to begin, I'd be extremely grateful! We are reluctant to go to real estate agent since their commission is a bit high...
Thank you very much in advance!

I can't help you with your question but would not that you can always rent the furniture separately. A guy I know even negotiated for his landlord to rent furniture for them in a "normal" apartment.
"We are reluctant to go to real estate agent since their commission is a bit high..."
It might be hard to get around that. Lots of landlords will insist.

Also see Hong Kong > Relocation Services > Furniture Rental: http://www.santaferelo.com/ecs/index.jsp
Furniture rental, soft furnishings, basic kitchen items and linens can be hired for short or long-term periods. Goods are purchased only from high quality suppliers.
The benefits of furniture rental service should never be underestimated. For corporate clients, Santa Fe provides weekly or monthly rates and no deposit is required. The provision of furniture rental saves money otherwise spent on putting transferees into serviced apartments or hotels. In addition, if a corporate client is paying rent on a vacant property, a newly relocated employee can move into that property and be provided with necessities by using the furniture rental program.
For relocating individuals or families, using the furniture rental service allows them to get familiar with their new neighbourhood during the period of waiting for their household goods shipment to arrive at destination. Conversely, furniture rental allows families to stay in their homes while their household goods are on their way to a new place. This is useful should a family wish to send their goods back home before school examinations are completed.

have you looked at ibis in north point. they usually have decent monthly packages though the rooms are a bit tight and no pool.

Thank you axptguy38 and ed, I didn't know you could rent furniture! If we have to, we'll spring for an agent but best case scenario, we either find a decent serviced apartment for a decent price or manage to get a good deal on a flat and rent the furniture!
cookie09, thank you for the suggestion! I actually hadn't but I'll check it out right away!
If anyone has any other suggestions for housing complexes and serviced apartments, let me know!

You can indeed rent furniture. You can even rent a TV and such.

your budget is a bit low for serviced apts on the island i'm afraid....esp. one with gym etc....take a look in Kowloon for better prices...Ibis location would be ideal as it's one train to Hang Hau and another the opposite way to Central, all at North Point Station

You mentioned you are only staying in HK for 10 months. As such you may find it very difficult to find a lease on a rental apartment for just 10 months so your only options would be to either house share or go with a serviced apartment.

thank you all for your help!
That's true, so far we've been able to negotiate down the rental period but it's difficult managing this alongside asking for a furnished apartment, preferably inclusive of electricity, water, and internet in the rental price.
I've been looking for serviced apartments but either they're out of the 11,000 k price range or ridiculously far away. I'm hoping for some near hang hau, po lam, etc but I still don't have any leads. I wouldn't mind anything even near chai wan, etc. but I haven't found anything yet.
Suggestions?

I am not sure that you will find any serviced apartments in Hang Hau, Po Lam, Tseung Kwan O area. It isn't really serviced apartment territory.
If you can find something in Quarry Bay or North Point (as suggested above) then it is a direct MTR hop to Hang Hau ( 15 mins on Tseung Kwan O line) or direct into Central (15 mins on Island line).
Alternatively look for a Break Clause apartment on the Asia Expat property section.

Check this out :
http://www.bayviewpark.com.hk/en_portfolio.html - Virtual Tour available for viewing.
616 sq ft, 849 sq ft, 1400 sq ft.
Can do 6 months fully furnished or unfurnished.
Good Management Office.
I think they can do from month-2-month. Can do fully or partially furnished.
They are within 3 min walk to MTR Chaiwan. Chaiwan used to be a factory area but . the entire area is about to or has been rezoned as there are very few factories in HK. Very Quiet, compared to midlevels or metropolis of Kln.
All appliances provided by landlord : Sino Properties. No agent needed, so you save and can bargain.
There was 1 ad recently in the Rental Section of this site listing it for $11,800 Inclusive for 600 sq ft (Marble Bathroom).

forgot about that place. i checked it out a few years ago. Nice flats, clean and modern (spilt ac), nice floors and common areas. has a small pool and clubhouse, and yes, easy walk to Chai Wan Station. also a Welcome at street level.

That's frustrating that there are no serviced apartments in that area...
Thank you &&& for the suggestion! I'll definitely be checking it out today.
funbobby, what did you mean your post was deleted? and what is the problem with bayviewpark
katjamp, the icehouse places were a bit too pricey... but thank you for the suggestion though!
It would be ideal to find a place around northpoint/quarry bay. But I'll keep on looking! Thank you for all the help and keep it coming =)

what I meant was I forgot about Bayview Park. It IS a viable option. I didn;t know they did serviced apts...
My deleted post was the one where I posted a link to a serviced apt in North Point that is NOT one of AsiaXpats sponsors, so Ed deleted the post. I re-sent it to you in a personal message.

Hi Dragongal - Did you have any luck finding something in Northpoint/Quarry Bay. Im in a similar situation to you.

Actually, I found a place in Hang Hau. To be honest, I ended up going with a real estate agent and she found me an amazing apartment! It was a smaller company and I think that if you need to "break the lease" early, then smaller companies are a little more flexible in what they'll attempt to find for you. I went to tons of places that just told me a flat out "no" because leases are technically supposed to be for one year but it worked out in the end. Good luck! It's honestly a lot of trial and error and a little bit of luck.
