Exploring a major tourist city? Take a walking tour. Guides know the enchanting alleys and shortcuts. They are longtime residents of the cities and excellent, often native, English speakers. They are constantly researching, and they give an overview of the city so that walkers can more easily return to places they see along the way.

Walking in Shenzhen, just over the border from Hong Kong, is fantastic. For starters, catch the MTR to Lok Ma Chau and then two stops on the same line on the Shenzhen side to reach Lianhua Park. If you pick up a copy of the Map of Shenzhen (with pocket bilingual taxi guide) at Dymocks booksellers in Hk (eg Harbour Centre, IFC, Central Building,Lyndhurst Terrace etc) you'll see how easy it is. Lianhua Park is next to the brilliant new Shenzhen Museum and the 24-hour Book City complex so it is an easy starter walk to combine walking 30 minutes to the top of Lianhua Park (Great view out over Shenzhen at the top) with noodles at Book City and a visit to the museum. Plenty of other great walks too.
