Taxis in HK

So we took a taxi last night, saw a friend standing by the street, wound down the window of the taxi half mast, got her attention, offered her a lift, open the taxi door and bang..... the window shattered into a thousand pieces...

Angry taxi driver and all.....

Angry taxi driver then tells us that in the Toyota Crown (the taxi of choice in Asia) one cannot wind down the window half way and open the door, this will always cause a shattered window.

I mean, this is the general public we are talking about, surely such a design flaw cannot happen in a car where every Tom Dick and Harry is let loose?

Any thoughts?

If it is true, and it sounds unlikely, why don't they post a warning sign?

EXACTLY the same thing happened to us. The window was half way down. I opened the door for my daughter. Felt slight resistance but kept opening. KER-BLAM!!! A million pieces of glass.

The driver was very apologetic, especially since there were a lot of fragments flying and many got onto my daughter.

Perhaps that explains why so many taxis in HK have the rear door window handles removed. I had always assumed that was so that windows were not left open thus negating the efficiency of the aircon.......or so that you had the full effect of the odors of some drivers! :-(

if on the passenger side, could it be to do with the linkage that allows the driver to open the door from his seat? just a possibility...bad design in any case...

In our case it was on the passenger side so your hypothesis now has one data point in favor.
